Europe remains central to United States' security

In a speech on 29 January 2010 at l'Ecole Militaire (Military School) in Paris, France, U.S. Secretay of State Hillary Clinton stressed the partnership between the United States and Europe is essential to meet global challenges. Although "Europe is more secure than ever before," much work would remain to strengthen cooperation and build a strong and unified Europe. As a result, Clinton considered it was appropriate to discuss the future of European Security since France has fully re-integrated NATO months ago and is now fully participating in NATO's integrated command structure. She reminded that the U.S. and Europe have worked side by side for decades to defend and promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law. The fight against al Qaeda and terrorist networks in Afghanistan shows the alliance between the two continents has grown strong and stable, she said.
