Disagreement between parties still prevents solution in Western SaharaA fifth session of official negotiations on Western Sahara is planned on 10-11 February 2010. The meeting will take place in suburban New York's Westchester County (U.S.). UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross said he wants the region to move towards a political solution that is fair, lasting and mutually acceptable to the parties within the framework of the United Nations. Indeed, the UN Security Council (UNSC) voted resolution 1871 in April 2009 which welcomed the parties’ agreement to hold small, informal talks in preparation for a fifth round of negotiations, calling upon them to continue the dialogue under Mr. Ban’s auspices without preconditions to achieve “a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, which will provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.” Full Article for Subscribers
